Making Christmas fun for children is important, but it shouldn't create a mountain of credit card debt. It also shouldn't cost nearly as much as it currently does. The key to a joyful festive season is creating a range of activities that involve children and encourage them to be creative so that a sense of achievement is felt.
Ask Children if They Would Like to Make Christmas Cards
Buying a pack of Christmas cards and writing peoples' names on them is about as much fun as working on a production line. It needn't be this way. A Christmas card is little more than a piece of card folded into two with an attractive picture or shapes on the front so it isn't a complicated process for kids.
Children are blessed with creativity and would love the chance to make their own Christmas cards. Consider buying some paint, coloured paper and glue and they will be able to make their own cards. Just imagine how thrilled relatives will be when they receive these, as they'll realise how much effort has gone in to their card.
Let the Kids Choose Christmas Gifts for Close Relatives
Half of the fun of Christmas is shopping for bargains that people will like. Tell children how much can be spent on each person and they'll really relish searching for that ideal gift. It will also give them an appreciation of the value of money from an early age.
Get Them to Do Some of the Christmas Baking at Home
Whilst it isn't sensible allowing young children to cut the Christmas turkey, they are more than capable of doing other things. There isn't anything that should get in the way of them preparing bread or putting the icing on a cake.
Watch a Christmas Show, Pantomime or Nativity Play as a Family
There is almost always a Christmas show, such as Scrooge or The Nut Cracker, on at a local theatre and it can be a lot of fun to attend this together. Kids are normally able to attend at a discount so it needn't be expensive.
Read Christmas Stories Together
There are few things more precious than time, but time doesn't cost anything to give. Spend those free moments with the kids and share a few Christmas stories with them. Christmas story books can be picked up at local charity stores for next to nothing and also make an excellent Christmas present in their own right.
Buy Children Cheap Christmas DVD's on eBay
Picking up some bargain DVD's on eBay will keep the children occupied on Christmas day whilst they wait for dinner. The last thing anybody wants is to be constantly disturbed whilst preparing the family turkey. The DVD's can also be used as a Christmas present in their own right so it is very much a win-win situation.
